For the twenty-fifth anniversary of the iPod, Apple recreated the entire device and its UI as the 404 page for Apple Music. (You will need to copy and paste that link into your web browser if you’re on an iPhone or iPad; it will open the Apple Music app otherwise.)
The iPod recreation is extremely feature complete: it’s got music, artists, playlists, and yes, the games, all lovingly rendered on a monochrome display inside your browser window. And yes, the click wheel works with your grubby little thumbs the same way it did twenty-five years ago.
I’m particularly impressed with the music selections. This iPod comes virtually loaded with a selection of iPod-era classics. It’s a lot of pop punk and nü metal, among other things, including a host of Green Day, No Doubt, and even P.O.D.‘s “Youth of a Nation” (a song I hadn’t heard since I owned an iPod, if I’m being honest).
