Extraordinarily self-indulgent filmmaking with a couple notable — probably excellent — performances. Very Assayas, but this is just a shadow of his work. Oscar bait by any definition. 

This is not how intergenerational reconciliation in a family works, and maybe it’s my own history with my own family, but I was kind of offended by this take. I don’t want to say more, because I’m not airing my dirty laundry, but parents don’t get to dictate the terms of both their failures and their forgiveness.
