Film director Rian Johnson (of Knives Out and Looper fame) has a new camera app for iPhone (announcement tweet). It’s not for videography; it’s just for photography. But it looks legit.
From Johnson:
So I recently badgered my cinematographer @steveyedlin into making my ideal iPhone still camera app. It shoots RAW, bypasses the iPhone’s look processing and instead uses the same image processing we use on our movies.
I think this is a big deal. The image pipeline for Johnson’s movies is meticulous. His films are shot digitally, but truly look like celluloid. (I say this as a giant film nut.)
Yedlin’s website is a true nerd’s site. He has a two and a half hour video in which he debunks HDR. He explains how colour science works. My understanding is that the industry views Yedlin as a sort of mad scientist.
His work speaks for itself. His work on Knives Out, Wake Up Dead Man, and The Last Jedi has all blown me away. He really understands how light works. (You’d think that’s a given for cinematographers, but it’s not.)
I’m very keen to try out this app.
