Hoffman is magnetic. An incredible performance that elevates the entire picture. I also really enjoyed Catherine Keener’s performance. Together, they captured a sense of humanity that so many biopics are missing.
But still, something here is missing. Perhaps it’s a sense of import, or an actual statement about Truman’s impact. It feels like this is a film with little conflict or resolution. Things just happen, and then it’s over. Those 114 minutes are enjoyable, but of little import or impact beyond the grace Hoffman renders his portrayal of the titular character.
That’s a bit of a shame: if this cast were married to a script that wanted to challenge our assumptions about anything, it could have really cooked.
