Pretty astonishing, and well worth its reputation. There is a certain repudiation of the church and an embrace of humanism that is at once obvious and subtle, and I loved how thoughtful it was even when it was pretentious and depressing. But it had a funny side too. I think I made a good pick for a first Bergman film.
