A well-written, riotously entertaining romp that has no right to be as fun as it is. Stellar performances all around, of course. But Tom Hooper directs this with the aesthetic of a first year film student who just discovered wide angle portraiture. That would be fine if Hooper had taste, but he also seems to think the perfect font pairing for a period film set in the 1930s is Futura. So basically, just like any tasteless shmuck can become president, I guess any tasteless shmuck can become a film director.
(That being said, Hooper’s bizarre directorial choices are a moot point when his casting is so ace.)
