So great. Come for the brilliant character designs, stay for the relentless pace and imaginative storytelling.

Seriously though, those character designs. I want a No-Face doll and I’m a grown man. The best art design of the 21st century is Japanese.

A couple additional notes:

  1. Saw a couple comparisons to Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz. Sure. I like both of those, but this is a better film than either.

  2. The sheer inventiveness of the character design, which I know I keep coming back to (sorry) reminded me very much of the OT Star Wars trilogy. Miyazaki is a visual creator operating at the same deft level of unfiltered creativity as George Lucas. It’s so great. So great.
