My favourite scene is the one where they discuss the Don’s love of wine in his old age, and he shares how he always wanted Michael to become a senator or governor. There’s this beautiful moment there: an acknowledgement of the loss of innocence that rings true and sad.
In the same scene, there’s a quip: “women and children can be careless, but not men.” And perhaps because of that, we are doomed to become like our fathers and like what we don’t want to be.
I don’t know. It’s late and I’m rambling.
Friends came over tonight to watch Godfather II and it was only then that I learned they had never seen the first. I’m always astounded by how the modern film lover struggles to keep up with the pace of this film. We truly don’t make them like this anymore.
